Dental caries or tooth decay is one of the most common and costly infectious diseases in the United States, affecting more than 50 percent of children and the vast majority of adults aged 18 and older. Americans spend more than $70 billion each year on dental services, with the majority of that amount going toward the treatment of dental caries.
Wenyuan Shi, the chair of the oral biology section at UCLA School of Dentistry has developed a new mouthwash product which contains a new antimicrobial technology called STAMP. Dr. Shi’s new drug will act as a sort of “smart bomb”, and eliminate only the harmful bacteria in the mouth and remain effective for an extended period of time.
Based on the success of his limited clinical trial, a New Investigational Drug Application has been filed with the U.S. FDA which is expected to begin more extensive clinical trials. This research has the potential for laying a foundation for developing additional target-specific “smart bomb” antimicrobials to combat other diseases.
